What is a ransomware?

Ransomware is a form of software that is created and shared by a malicious cyber criminal, scammer or hacker. The software takes control of the recipient’s computer and locks down access to files and crucial components.

It then demands a ransom, often in the form of bitcoin, to unlock access to the files. Sometimes, ransomware comes with a timer after which the files are destroyed; sometimes, this can happen even if the ransom is paid.
