Mailmeteor started 6 years ago as a Google Sheets extension. Since then, we’ve grown a lot by adding tons of new features and building extensions for Gmail, Excel, Google Docs (and even an iOS app).
Our Google Sheets extension got a lot of updates along the way, with new features, such as scheduling, autopilot, follow-ups, and more recently, automations.
Today, more than 6 million users have access to Mailmeteor for Sheets. That’s why we recently looked at how we could improve it.
A faster way to send emails in Google Sheets
Today I’m excited to unveil a new UI that we’re progressively rolling out. Here’s how it looks like:
With this redesign, we’ve rethought the entire experience to make sending email campaigns faster, simpler, and more intuitive.
You can still add attachments, personalize with merge tags, and format your email — but everything now flows more naturally, with fewer clicks and clearer steps.
How did we get there?
In a recent product meeting, we counted the number of steps required to send an email campaign from Sheets. The number was not that much: only 5 steps.
- Create a new template
- Write the message
- Save the template
- Click on “Send emails”
- Confirm sending
Not too bad! But we discovered that some steps are not easy to find for someone new to our tool. We also realized that the redesign gave us an opportunity to simplify the process.
With the new design, the number of steps is now only 3:
- Write the message
- Click on “Send emails”
- Confirm sending
And we did all of this while preserving all existing features (adding attachments, images, etc.), and adding new ones such as more formatting options (like choosing your font and adjusting sizes).
Making templates more flexible
Since the beginning of Mailmeteor for Sheets, templates have been the mandatory way of sending emails with Mailmeteor. In fact, you had to create a template to send emails.
Our other products have been more flexible. For example, in the Dashboard, you can use templates, but it’s optional. Instead, when you create a new campaign, you are invited to write your email message directly. The same goes for our Gmail extension.
That’s why we’re making templates behave more like reusable blocks:
While our early users are used to creating templates, we found out that if you’re just trying to send a quick campaign, you could work faster and simpler without templates.
Of course, your templates are still available and you can use all of them in Sheets. When you insert a template, it’s going to be displayed directly in the main editor.
And you can edit templates from the Dashboard, with a bigger UI compared to the smaller editor you had previously in Sheets. All changes made in the Dashboard are instantly reflected in Mailmeteor for Sheets.
What’s next?
This new design is being progressively rolled out, with all users expected to have transitioned by May 14th, 2025.
Looking ahead, this redesign will also let us add more features to our Google Sheets extension, making it even easier for you to send personalized emails.
So, we can’t wait for you to get your hands on it. As always, we’re looking forward to gathering feedback. Whether you think we nailed it or not, please let us know.
