You can add aliases from any domain (like @gmail.com, @yourdomain.com) create a new Outlook.com email address, and add it as an alias.

However, you can’t use a work or school email as an alias. Nor can you use existing Hotmail, Live, Outlook.com, and MSN addresses. Or an alias that is already associated with another Microsoft account.

How to remove an Alias from Outlook

You can remove an Outlook Alias by following the steps below. But you should know that if you remove an alias that’s an email address from a Microsoft domain (like @hotmail.com, @live.com, @outlook.com, or @msn.com), you’ll permanently delete this alias and it can’t be associated with any Microsoft account again.

  1. On your desktop, navigate to the gear icon at the top right of your Outlook inbox.
  2. Select Email settings → Sync email.
  3. Navigate to Email aliases
  4. Select Remove next to the alias you no longer want.

  3. Select your address from this dropdown

If your alias isn’t listed:

  • Select “Use another email address” from that dropdown

In Outlook Desktop:

  • This opens a new input field
  • Put in your custom address
  • It will appear in the dropdown going forward

Not working? You might need to do this for Outlook Web:

  1. Go to Settings > Mail > Compose and Reply
  2. Scroll down to “Addresses to send from”
  3. Mark the checkbox on the ones you want to show in the From dropdown

How do I change the display name of an alias in Outlook?

You cannot have different display names for different emails. They will all have the display name associated with your Microsoft account. However, you can change your overall display name by following these steps:

  1. At the top right of your Outlook.com inbox click your profle picture.
  2. Click Edit profile.
  3. Click Edit name.
  4. Enter a first name and last name, and select Save.
  5. Wait for up to 24 hours for it to take effect.
